Hi Jacqueline,
That's great. I have granted the edit access to you. And I have added the "Ideas" section in the document. We can put all the ideas from the projects there.
Hi Willem,
You can start to write up the ideas of FEAST project. ;)
Hi Ibrahim, and TAC
So far we only have Milvus and FEAST projects in this event. Can we expand the participant scope to the open-source projects of our foundation members, although the projects are not currently hosted in LF AI & Data?
Thanks.

Jun -- There are currently only ideas listed from Feast and I anticipated Milvus will add theirs but the deadline has passed. However, with only two projects involved I am not sure that this will be a good proposal based on the goal of 5 projects. This may be something that needs to be a planned initiative with more notice leading up to the next year's application.
Please note that the deadline for submission to Google is February 21st which is a US holiday and I will be out of office on Friday February 18th so if anything else is going to come through it needs to be in by 3pm ET today, February 16th if you still want a submission via LF AI & Data.

Hi Jacqueline,
Sorry for the delay. I have added Milvus project ideas into the doc.
I raised this event one month before at the TAC meeting. Maybe people haven't been involved in GSoC before, so they are a little hesitant about this event. You are right. We should do this with more leading notice next year.
Thanks a lot for all your support.

Dear Jun and team
I explored interest in IBM a few weeks ago but did not get much of a response. I've just sent out a "last call" for ideas with the assumption that the idea project must be hosted at the LF-AI

Hi Susan,
"the assumption that the idea project must be hosted at the LF-AI"
I think this could be a discussion topic for the governing board. I see some foundation, for example, the Python Software Foundation (PSF) is willing to act as an umbrella organization in GSoC for Python projects. But CNCF only covers the hosted projects.

Jun -- I would recommend starting this discussion again as early as midyear so that projects can discuss their ideas, formulate the details, and submit content at the end of the year which can also align with their plans/goals for the following year. With projects being very busy, something like this can take more planning time especially after coming back from the holiday in January.
@Ibrahim Haddad can comment additional on accepting outside projects, however, the primary reasons you see LF projects (such as CNCF) only work with hosted projects is that there is added complexity in interfacing with external projects (along with additional resourcing efforts required to do that) and the foundation wants to support collaboration among the existing projects which have gone through the process of joining the Foundation. I think that with additional planning time it would be possible to get to the goal of 5 projects having solid participation plans, leading to a good application submission.

I think this could be a discussion topic for the governing board. I see some foundation, for example, the Python Software Foundation (PSF) is willing to act as an umbrella organization in GSoC for Python projects. But CNCF only covers the hosted projects.

Jacqueline,
"... a submission will not be possible for this year ..."
So Milvus and FEAST projects have to raise the applications by themselves?
Although we only have 2 projects this year, I will suggest we do this under LF AI & Data Foundation. I think the foundation needs much more presence to demonstrate the commitment to support open-source innovation in AI & Data. If we could make it through this event, I hope the foundation could earn the credits, not just the projects receiving credits.
If collaborating with public OSS projects is challenging, can we extend the coverage to the relevant projects of the foundation members? It will be easy to manage, as the TAC members could help to coordinate the effort in their organizations.

Hi everyone,
Just to let you know that I had a call with Jun and we worked on submitting the application for GSoC for FEAST and Milvus.
Stay tuned :)

Date: Thu, Feb 17, 2022, 08:03 Subject: Re: [LF AI TAC-General] [LF AI Technical Projects] Google summer of code Susan: There are still not enough projects participating as of today's extension so a submission will not be possible for this year. However, ART should definitely plan to participate in the effort when it is resurfaced for next year.
Jun: It would be a good idea to keep your Google doc with the initial information gathered if you are ok with that.

I explored interest in IBM a few weeks ago but did not get much of a response. I've just sent out a "last call" for ideas with the assumption that the idea project must be hosted at the LF-AI
Best Wishes Susan

Hi Jacqueline,
Sorry for the delay. I have added Milvus project ideas into the doc.
I raised this event one month before at the TAC meeting. Maybe people haven't been involved in GSoC before, so they are a little hesitant about this event. You are right. We should do this with more leading notice next year.
Thanks a lot for all your support.

Date: Thu, Feb 17, 2022, 00:21 Subject: Re: [LF AI Technical Projects] Google summer of code Jun -- There are currently only ideas listed from Feast and I anticipated Milvus will add theirs but the deadline has passed.

Hi Willem,
You can start to write up the ideas of FEAST project. ;)
Hi Ibrahim, and TAC
So far we only have Milvus and FEAST projects in this event. Can we expand the participant scope to the open-source projects of our foundation members, although the projects are not currently hosted in LF AI & Data?
Thanks.

Hi Willem,
Thanks for the confirmation. Nothing to be done at this point. I am collecting interest and we need few projects to participate.
Everyone else - please flag here if you'd like your project to be part of our application submission to GSoC.
